French Mediterranean Cannes Cote D'azur Oil on Panel, Ca 1935 by Pierre Lucas , Palm Trees and Boule Players by the Port

Description

I think you will agree that this little gem of a painting is the perfect antidote to the weather outside! Depicting the French Mediterranean - probably the Cote d'Azur near Cannes - with palm trees and boule (petanque) players, it was painted by Pierre Robert Lucas in circa 1935-36.

The painting is easy to date as shortly thereafter, in 1937, Pierre Lucas obtained the prestigious "Prix de Rome" for the most promising young artist. He spent a year at the Villa Medicis, where he italicised his name and began to sign "Luca".

It is also easy to see why Lucas won the Prize of Rome: his art has confidence, ease and freshness. After his year in Italy, during which he travelled widely, he would settle in Paris, and exhibit extensively. He did not cease to obtain prizes for his work: obtaining the Marie Bashkirseff Prize, the silver medal of the Salon des Artistes Francais, and an Hors Concours at the International Exhibition.

An oil on panel, our painting measures 11 x 18 cm and is signed at the lower left. The overall framed size in a simple vintage whitewashed frame is 18.5 x 22.5 cm.
