Brave Fine Art has dated this piece to the 18th Century.
In the foreground, a gentleman wearing a hat, coat, waistcoat and breeches, stands close to a seated lady dressed in blue. She looks upwards towards him as they hold a conversation. While on the river, three men are setting off on a small boat, perhaps to fish or for a trip upstream.
With its illuminated distant hills, mature trees, dark foreground, and historic buildings, the painting is reminiscent of 17th-century continental landscapes, particularly the works of Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin. The artist, although probably an amateur, was clearly influenced by this style, like many other British painters during the late 18th/early 19th-century.
It’s housed within a fairly contemporary swept frame and the reverse bears some interesting partial labels.

Year of creation: c. 1780 - c. 1820
Condition: Board extended (historically) by adding an extra piece on to the bottom. Frame in good order. The reverse has been left untidy to display the various layers of history.
