Description

A small turn of the century oil on canvas depicting a continental gentleman dressed in a yellow waistcoat, frock coat, shirt and blue tie.

Towards the end of the 19th-century, fashionable gentleman often turned their shirt collars down and wore a knotted tie style. For many decades previously, collars had been worn up and accompanied by a cravat or necktie.

Also around this time, hair tended to be cut short with a side parting, while moustaches were de rigueur.

Medium: Oil on canvas

Size including frame: 9” x 8¼” / 24cm x 21cm x 3cm

Year of creation: c. 1890 - c. 1910

Condition: One tidy repair to the canvas and frame with a few scratches.
