Description

I am delighted to offer for sale this stunning Victorian Painting by the artist Charles Henry Passey, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner.

This is a fine detailed painting beautifully depicting a panoramic landscape view of a cornfield being cut.

The location is probably a location in Surrey, with a village and church spire just visible, while in the foreground, four men are cutting corn. To the left foreground, near the stile out of the field, are some corn stooks, the result of their earlier labours.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Charles Henry Passey (1847-1898) was born in Shelton, Near Hanley, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, the son of Edward and Maria Passey, and was baptised at St. Mark's Church in Shelton. His father was a commercial traveller and the family soon moved to London. He married his wife Helen Samuel in 1878 and in the 1881 Census, they were living at 49 Bromfelde Road, Clapham and Charles was listed as an Artist Landscape Painter. He died in 1898 in Hampstead aged just 50.

According to Graves Dictionary, he exhibited 4 paintings in London exhibitions between 1878 and 1885. There are 2 of his paintings in the National Collection, 1 in Guildford and 1 in Salford Museum and Art Gallery.

The painting is newly framed in a 3 1/2" ornate swept gilt frame and slip and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.

Frame size: 36 3/4" Inches x 26 1/2" Inches ( 93.45cm x 67.4cm )

CONDITION

Very good. The canvas is clean and taut and has been relined in the past. There is no craquelure or paint loss. The frame and slip are new.
