Skippings Fine Arts has dated this piece to the 1940s.
from circa 1948. The artwork has illustrious provenance: it came from the estate
of the mythical Paris art dealers Bernheim-Jeune, who promoted and
exhibited the artist in the 1940s.
Bernheim-Jeune started presenting works by Pierre Bonnard, Édouard Vuillard, Paul Cézanne, Henri-Edmond Cross, Kees van Dongen, Henri Matisse, Le Douanier Rousseau, Raoul Dufy, Maurice de Vlaminck, Amedeo Modigliani and Maurice Utrillo.
The gallery became one of the centers of the artistic avant-garde.
Our oil on canvas bears the Bernheim-Jeune inventory number on the
stretcher bars, as well as its original price tag of
45.000 francs- which was a lot of money in 1948!
Measuring 50x 65 cm, the painting is offered with a modest frame.
Jean Chauffrey had studied in the studio of Lucien Simon, along with other
artists that are favourites of mine: Boris Taslitzky, Amrita Sher-Gil and
Andre Hambourg. Chauffrey exhibition widely, at the Salon des Tuileries,
thé Salon de Mai and the Salon d'Automne.
