He’s often remembered for pioneering a technique known as Pointillism, which involves using thousands of dots to build an image.
This particular piece is a vintage gravure of a vagabond that was originally a chalk sketch. It was reproduced for a portfolio of master drawings and that’s what you see here.
The gravure process involves carefully etching an image onto a cylinder across a gridded pattern of tiny cells. The cells are recessed to allow the ink to gather within them at different intensities.
