In the early 1890s, puffed sleeves were thinner and covered more of the arm, but over the course of that decade they shortened and were eventually brought in at the elbow. By 1900, the puffed sleeve was reduced considerably as the focus moved on to the hips.
Arthur Dacres Rendall was born in Harrow, Middlesex, and trained in Paris during the 1880s. In 1891, he moved to Suffolk and became well-known for his landscapes, portraits, genre scenes and historical paintings. Over the course of his career, he exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, and at the Ridley Art Club, London. His painting of Sir Robert Montgomery is currently held within the collection at the British Library.
This portrait is signed in the bottom left and housed within a wooden and stucco frame with decorative motifs.

Condition: Some foxing around the top and left-hand side of the artwork. The frame has several losses but holds together well.
