Our wintery Brittany landscape by Marcel Kervella has illustrious provenance: it was acquired from the Gallery of Paul Petrides, the mythical art dealer who represented Vlamick, Foujina, and notably discovered Maurice Utrillo, whose sole agent he became.

Marcel Kervella (born 1930), is a Breton artist living in Paris. Our oil on canvas depicts a scene from his native Brittany, a view of the village and port of Aber Vrac’h.

One of the many things I like about this painting is its texture. It is a figurative landscape, and yet, close-up it becomes a rich abstract tapestry, almost like a work by Nicolas de Stael.

Signed at the lower right, the painting is dated 1957 or 67 (the date is difficult to make out)

Presented in its original hand sculpted and gilded frame, the painting bears the Petrides gallery label at the verso. The overall size including the frame is 55 x 63cm
