When he returned home, he exhibited regularly at various institutions in London and the provinces.
His portraiture was highly regarded and subjects included Prime Minister Gladstone and the American department store owner, Isaac H Clothier. Bigland was elected to the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1891 and several of his works are held in prestigious collections.
