Description

A fine early 20th century portrait of a gentleman with a bushy walrus moustache, dark suit, white shirt, and green tie.

He's also wearing an interesting pair of armless ‘c-bridge’ pince-nez spectacles which, as the name suggests, feature a flexible c-shaped bridge to hold them in place. This style of eyewear was popular among those who could afford it and one of the most well-known owners was the 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt.

The artist, Josef Rolletschek (1859-1934), was an Austrian portrait painter that studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague, and the Grand Ducal Saxon School of Arts in Weimar. This particular work is signed and dated in the lower right.

Medium: Oil on canvas

Size: 29” x 23½” / 74cm x 60cm

Year of creation: c. 1916

Condition: Good aside from some light scuffing around the edges where it was previously framed.
