Large Portrait of a Lady in a Blue Silk Chiffon Dress

1920 - 1940
Description

A large captivating 1940s portrait of a dignified middle-aged lady in a blue pleated silk chiffon dress. She’s sat within a beautifully-carved mahogany armchair with green upholstery and wrap around arms. Her posture is open and her hands are gently held together.

The portrait provides only the one clue as to the identity of the subject - a single inscription reading ‘deliver to Cork House’ on the reverse. So far, the only Cork House that we’ve discovered was built by the Earl of Cork in the late 16th century, but that one was demolished in 1768.

The portrait is signed illegibly in the lower right and dated 1947.

Medium: Oil on canvas

Size including frame: 42½” x 34½” / 108cm x 88cm

Year of creation: c. 1947

Condition: Artwork in good condition and frame with light age-related wear. The back of the canvas is covered by a protective piece of material.
