A vibrant oil on canvas by Belgian artist, and art critic, Armand Eggermont (1883 - 1965).

Eggermont has used an earthy palette of browns, oranges and greens to depict a peaceful scene along the Chaussée de Louvain, which is the old road connecting Brussels to Leuven. He completed this work in 1927 when his contemporaries would’ve included Henri Matisse and André Derain. With a strong emphasis on bold lines and big colours, the influence of ‘Les Fauves’ is certainly clear to see.

In the foreground, three sailing vessels are moored before a series of buildings that jut out towards us in almost three dimensions. Each has been masterfully created using a combination of simple shapes and acute angles. While in the background, soft rolling hills cascade upwards into the yonder as a glimpse of blue sky nestles between the peaks.

Two years prior to creating this painting, Eggermont had exhibited at the "Galerie Royale" in Brussels. He also has a work at the Musée de Bruxelles.
