Superb Oil Painting by Edwin Ellis Rba 1841-1895

A superb oil on canvas by highly regarded Victorian artist Edwin Ellis. The painting is titled in pencil on the stretcher: 'Ruined mill at Holderness' and the scene shows the mill against a dramatic cloudy sky, with figures walking up a track returning from the sea. The painting has a great deal of atmosphere and is typical of the artist's impressionist type painting. The painting is signed to the lower right. Edwin Ellis was a Nottingham born painter who studied under Henry Dawson. He settled in London in the 1860's and exhibited at the Royal Academy and at the Sussex Street Gallery where he showed nearly 100 works. In 1893 a comprehensive collection of his works were displayed at the Nottingham Castle Museum. The painting has been professionally cleaned and retains the original superb quality gilt frame with original gilding and label. The painting is a great example of this desirable artist's work and has a wonderful untouched country house look. C.1870.
