A precocious child, Szobel held held his first exhibition of paintings at the age of eight! As a young adult, he was admitted to the Fine Arts Academy of Prague, and moved to Paris in 1927, where he became the student of Fernand Léger.
The modern French art movements influenced his works significantly.
As a result, he had a major solo exhibition in Bratislava in 1934.
Eventually, he returned to Paris where he would settle, and became friends with avantgarde artists such as Chagall, Le Corbusier, Aragon, Lucien Hervé and Sonia and Robert Delaunay.
In this inspiring and vibrant atmosphere, Szóbel’s painting fused fauvism, expressionism, surrealism and cubism.
Szobel joined the Czech Forces during WW2. After active service he came to London in the early 1940s, where art critic Herbert Read discovered his work. Szobels sketches from the front where exhibited at the Czechoslovak Institute in London in 1942. An exhibition at Victor Waddington Galleries in Dublin followed in 1945.
In Paris, Szobel exhibited at the prestigeous Galerie de France, and the equally renowned Galerie Blumenthal.
Our painting is a watercolour on paper dating from the 1950s, and measures 48,5 x 40 cm. It is signed at the lower left and the overall size including its vintage frame is 67 x 57 cm
