Born in Argentina to the Peruvian dancer Helba Huara, Elsa arrived in Paris with her mother in 1932. She became a model for the painter Balthus in 1933, and married the photographer Emile Savitry in 1940.
As an artists, she notably illustrated the works of the writer and surrealist artist Jacques Prévert, who dedicated one of his poems to her. She exhibited extensively, and her pictures were shown at the acclaimed "Primitives" exhibition at the Galerie Charpentier in Paris in 1976.
Paintings by Elsa Henriques figure in the Museum of Tel Aviv and in Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris. Measuring 39.5 x 52 cm, our oil on panel is signed and dated 1962 at the lower left, and titled on the verso. The overall size including a painted wood frame is 51 x 64 cm.
