Description

An attractive French post impressionist oil on canvas depicting a figure fishing in the Saone river at Lyons, with the city's Fourviere basilica in the background.

The artist, Claude Vanier (1903-1958) was a native of Le Havre, where he initially studied at the Fine Arts School. He later continued his studies at the academies in Montparnasse in Paris, and had his first Parisian exhibition in 1929. From then on, he exhibited at the Paris Salons, and was also a great traveller, painting in North Africa, Venice, and in numerous regions of France? At least two other artworks by him done in Lyon are known.

Our painting dates from circa 1940, measures 55 x 46 cm and is signed at the lower right. Overall size including a good later frame are 70 x 61 cm.
