The most seasonal of our landscapes! I have spent some time trying to figure out what exactly makes this painting so hauntingly beautiful.

I believe it is its perfect depiction of autumn mist: really one of the most beautiful things about the autumn months in nature.

Its rendering here turns what would be a dreary landscape into pure enchantment. That is what is magical about this painting!

The artist, Victor Lhomme (1870-1957) was born in Lille in the North of France, where he worked much of his life as an easel and mural painter and illustrator. He decorated the cupola of the Lille opera house, and a portrait by his hand him is in the collection the Museum of Fine Arts of the city. He is also known for his decoration of the ceiling of the theater of the town of Denain.

Our painting is an oil on canvas measuring 26 x 40 cm . Having been formerly accidented, it has be relined and restored/mounted on to a secondary canvas. It is signed and dated 1891 at the lower right. The overall framed size is 32 x 46 cm
