Landscape Oil Painting by John Joseph Hughes (1820-1909)

A fine oil on canvas landscape scene of Wast Water in the Lake District by John Joseph Hughes (1820-1909). The scene shows sheep grazing on the mountain side and view across the water with cattle in the distance. The work is signed to the lower left by the artist John Joseph Hughes a noted Birmingham-based Victorian landscape painter, whose work included depictions of rural occupations, parks, coastal scenes, churches, village and town scenes, and still life. He painted many works in Wales and the Lake District, and exhibited at the Royal Academy, British Institution, Suffolk Street, and around 360 works at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. The painting has been professionally cleaned and had a small repair. The painting is titled on the reverse and is mounted in a fine and dramatic period gilt frame which has had some restoration. The painting is quite large and gives a great period country house look. The work is signed to the bottom left. c.1870.
