It is always a delight to find a still life with interesting, whimsical subject matter. The one here presented is wonderful: we are given a black and a white feather, a conker, a painting-within-the-painting, and a chair with a seat of glass! Despite the quantity of objects, the composition is harmonious, and the scene is flooded with light.

It is a happy scene, very much in the style of the 1920s, with a touch of expressionism and art deco.

Signed F Gaillard, the work may be a late work of Francois Gaillard (1861-1932) a Belgian luminist painter in the circle of James Ensor and James Whistler.

Measuring 50 x 40 cm, the oil on canvas has been relined. The overall framed size is 64 x 54 cm.
