Haystacks 1880s French Plein Air Study in the Tradition of Courbet

Description

These haystacks, dating from the 1880s, are one of the loveliest examples of French plain air painting of the second haft of the 19th Century I have come across in a long time. In the wake of Courbet, it is inscribed in the realist tradition, depicting nature and the present moment, "as they are".

The oil on panel is unsigned, but ascribed to Arthur Henri Louis Dezobry (1854-1930) , as it comes from a Montmorency estate that had a connection with the artist. Dezobry had been a student of Boulagner and Lefebuvre, and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Francais from 1883, where he was awarded numerous medals.

It is presented in its original 19th Century leaf gold frame. The size of the panel is 14 x 23.5 cm. The overall framed size is 32 x 41 cm.
