A good early English landscape painting. The scene shows the ruins of an abbey in wooded landscape with figures in a boat in the foreground. It is likely that the scene shows an actual Abbey ruin but I have been unable to identify it. The work is competent and shows a knowledge of artistic styles of the period, the figures in the boat are very reminiscent of those seen in cappricio painting. The work is typically for this type of painting not signed, it has been professionally cleaned and over time has had some minor repairs. The painting appears to be in the original gilt frame and the whole is in excellent condition and ready to hang. A great way to get the instant English country house look. C.1820.
