A charming and unusual depiction of a Paris Square in Montmartre by Paul de Frick (1864-1935).

Noted artist De Frick studied with Gustave Boulagner and Luc Olivier Merson. He would go on to exhibit at the Salon des Artistes Francais, obtaining an honorable mention in 1914.

He is known for often adding unusual poetic detail to his paintings, and this can very much be observed in our little oil on canvas - note the quirky little chair in the foreground with its vibrating lines, the tiny person on the bench to the right. De Frick is almost a precursor of a future generation of Expressionists such as Gabriel Dauchot.

Here he depicts the Square d'Anvers, at the foot of Montmartre, with the Sacré Coeur Basilica in the background. The square featured a statue of Diderot sculpted by Leon Lecointe - it is no longer there, having ben melted down by the Nazis during the occupation!

I have added a period postcard of the Place d'Anvers for comparison - you can even see the chairs in it.

Our oil on canvas measures 22 x 27 cm, dates from the 1910s and is signed at the lower right. The overall framed size being 31 x 36 cm. A perfect painting for lovers of Montmartre - and of Diderot!
