Arundel Castle Oil Painting by Cecil Ross-burnett

A fine oil on canvas landscape by Cecil Ross-Burnett 1872-1933. The work is very impressionistic in manner and has a great softness and warmth. The view is almost certainly Arundel castle in Sussex looking away from the town. The painting is signed to the lower right and is quite unusual for the artist as he is more associated with watercolours. The work has been professionally cleaned and is mounted in what is likely to be the original gilt frame. The frame is a little tired and worn but it works very well with the painting. C.1900.

Cecil Ross Burnett, studied at Blackheath School of Art and the Westminster School of Art and in 1892 he entered the Royal Academy schools. In 1895, he obtained a Turner gold medal and scholarship for landscape painting. In 1898, he founded the Sidcup School of Art, where he was Headmaster for many years. He painted mainly rural landscapes and scenes, many of his landscapes were of areas of Amberley, Sussex where he owned a cottage. A member of the New Society of Water-Colour Painters and in 1907 joined the Langham Sketching Club and was also a member of the Pencil Society. He exhibited widely including 18 times at the Royal Academy. A portrait of Burnett by Mabel Oliver can be seen at the National Portrait Gallery.
