The oak is of the dense native variety associated with Snowdonia, north Wales, and is used throughout this piece.

Wonderful colour and surface patination.

For comparable examples see ''Welsh Furniture 1250-1950: A Cultural History of Craftsmanship and Design'' (Saer 2008), plates 586, 590.

This has to be one of the best dressers to have ever come out of Wales. It comes with a receipt from HW Keil of Broadway (one of the leading oak dealers of the twentieth century) dated 1955, where it is described as ''A rare 18th century small oak enclosed Dresser..'' and priced at £187.00.

It was sold to Mrs Edwin Fardon and descended to her son, John, who was one of the principal collectors of oak furniture of recent decades. It is illustrated in Victor Chinnery''s classic ''Oak Furniture: The British Tradition'', plate 3.335
