Victorian Irish Oil Painting by Robert Scanlan

A charming romantic oil on canvas by highly regarded Irish artist Robert Richard Scanlan. The scene is typical of Scanlan’s more comic works with an amorous couple being defended by a watchful dog. The quality of the painting is superb and has a life and depth to it not often scene in this type of painting. Scanlan was a highly regarded portraitist but also painted animals and some genre scenes, he exhibited at the Royal Academy many times between 1837 and 1859. The painting is in excellent condition and has been professionally cleaned, it is signed by monogram on the front and in full on the stretcher on the reverse. The painting is mounted in a Victorian period frame with original gilding, the slip has had some repair and is later gilded. C.1850.
