Skippings Fine Arts has dated this piece to the 1960s.
The actual title is Place Hivernale, 1960: a winterly place. This may not actually be that far from my mental association. Light particles drifting though a darkened sky. The painting seems to capture something very large.
Max Ernst was his neighbour in the village of Huismes, precisely at the moment when our painting was painted. The two men would dine together, play pétanque and chat about the surrealists.
André Bay did not paint to sell, so his works are extremely rare on the market. Ours has impeccable provenance: it comes from the collection of Gérard Mourgue (1921-1995) , a writer, editor, gallerist, and member of the Academie Française.
Painted in oil on masonite board, it is signed at the lower right and dated and titled on the verso. It measures and is mounted onto a very simple artist's frame, probably made by Bay himself. The board sits slightly convex on it, but would be flatter if the frame were changed.
