Charming Victorian Oil Painting By Kate Gray

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A large oil on canvas depicting a scene of a a child helping his grandmother ball yarn. The scene is painted in beautiful detail with typical Victorian sentimentality.

Kate Gray was active from 1864 to 1875 exhibiting at galleries including the Royal Society of British Artists. Gray was the artist''s maiden name and when married she was Kate Curwen. She seems to have had commercial success as an artist selling in 1864 one work for £40 a considerable sum. Her work is typically Victorian with family scenes often accompanied by a suitable title, however I cannot find one here. This painting is signed and dated by the artist 1879 and is likely to have been one of her exhibited works. The painting has been professionally cleaned.

The work is in the original superb quality gilt frame which retains the original untouched gilding.

The whole is an excellent example of it''s type, with a huge decorative impact, and is ready to hang.
