The dresser rack consists of wide good quality (a sign of quality) pine backboards, with three grooved horizontal racks that can support plates. To the top of the rack there is a lovely straight protruding cornice. The rack rests upon the dresser base, on large strong shaped shoes. Below, the breakfront dresser base boasts a solid single-plank mahogany top with a central column of working mahogany fronted drawers flanked by a cupboard and a drawer each side. To each side of the centre of the dresser are ring turned quarter columns. The base consists of six working mahogany fronted drawers with turned rosewood knobs and two cupboards, also rosewood knobs. The doors are decorated with inset Gothic style twin arched panels. It is nice to see that this dresser features all its working drawers. Quite often, similar dressers have feature faux / decorative drawers down the centre but this dresser boasts all working drawers, which is a nice feature.
All drawers are pine lined, hand dovetailed, smooth running and close flush to the frame. The right hand drawer and the left hand cupboard both retain the original working locks, with a working key. The rest of the drawers feature faux keyholes; the right hand cupboard has historically had a lock, but this has been removed some time ago. The drawers and cupboards boast kite-shaped bone escutcheons. The dresser is further decorated with inlaid dots and diamonds, in the typical style that was common in Talwrn, a village on the island of Anglesey, Wales. The inlay incorporates ebony & mahogany timbers. The dresser stands on the original shaped bracket feet. This dresser boasts its original polish and patination, displaying a mellow golden brown oak colour, which has been created from 200 years of care.
Condition Report:
The dresser is in excellent original condition, considering its age. The base and rack are original to each other and are not a marriage. Nominal old use marks to the top of the dresser and leading edges, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The dresser base retains its original rosewood knobs. All drawers and doors are in good working condition. There are working locks to the right hand drawer and left hand cupboard, with a working key. The backboards, drawer linings and feet are all original. The dresser boasts the original polish; therefore it has a fantastic depth of colour and patination displaying a lovely mellow golden brown oak colour. This item is solid in joint and ready to use.
