Mansion House Antiques & Fine Art has dated this piece to the 18th Century.

The sitter is portrayed with as a serious character of influence and his facial features convey a person of distinction, elements captured perfectly by the accomplished artist of this portrait.
The gentleman has noticeable piercing blue eyes which have been sharply rendered and his ‘half smile’ imbues the sitter with a warm character.

There is lovely impasto in the lace collar which is a pleasing touch as this is so often an element no longer present on paintings of this age as they have so often been flattened in the restoration process.

The artist has incorporated the sitter’s coat of arms in the portrait and the back of the canvas contains the following inscription and signature:
IDENTIFICATION of Artist & Sitter.
" Mr Christian August Helffrich b. March 10, 1747. G A Eger p (inxit)"

This possibly refers to Georg Adam Eger (1727-1808) who was a German Court painter, born in Murrhardt Germany.
The sitter has yet to be the subject of finer monograph, a task perhaps avoided by art historians due to the lack of any archive, notebooks or memoranda, which after research has not produced any further

information.
