Description

An important, exhibited oil on panel by Georges Alexandre Grégore-Lavaux (born 1887), an artist who had studied with Alexandre Jacob .

Our painting was shown at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1909, and bears on the verso the stamp of the exhibition, as well as a partial label.

The artwork is still in its original exhibition frame, which bears its number at the lower right.

Grégoire-Lavauw exhibited with the Société des Artistes Français throughout his career. Gregoire-Lavaux's paintings have been sold through Frost & Reed in the UK, who also edited prints by the artist.

I only learnt about his connection to Alexandre Jacob recently, but as soon as I head, it made perfect sense: there is a similar peaceful quietness, love for lakes and rivers, and an attunedness to nature.

Our painting bear the title handwritten by the artist on a label on the verso: "Un soir d'été" - a summer's eve at - à J ...."

Part of the label has disappeared, and with it the name of the town or city depicted. It is likely to be a scene in Normandy, or possibly Brittany.

In all original condition, never haven been taken out of its original frame. The size of the panel is 55 x 46 cm, overall framed size 65 x 57 cm
