Superb Edwardian Landscape Oil Painting by R.w.bates

A fantastic example of Edwardian landscape painting by Robert William Bates. The painting shows a dramatic valley scene with a stream and sheep grazing on the hillside. The weather is quite gloomy but in the distance a bright white patch of sunshine is breaking through. The artist Robert William Bates has signed the work to the lower left and dated it 1906. Bates is not well recorded but did study at the Newcastle on Tyne School of Art, lived in Cheshire and exhibited mainly at the Royal Cambrian Academy. This work is certainly an exhibited piece by the artist and by far the best work of his I have seen. The painting has been professionally cleaned and is mounted in the original gilt frame, which has been later gilded. A large and dramatic work this painting gives a huge impact.
