A fine and rare oil on board by American artists Burr H. Nicholls, signed lower right. The scene is typical of his work, showing a rural continental scene with chickens in a barn and a view through the door to a sunlit well. The painting is in excellent condition, having been professionally cleaned. Burr H. Nicholls 1848-1915 is best known for his continental scenes, which tend to be street scenes of peasant figures silhouetted against brightly sunlit walls. While in Venice he met the well known English watercolour specialist Rhoda Holmes; after they married they settled in New York City, where she became a highly regarded watercolour teacher. Nicholls was painting in Buffalo in 1896, and he was certainly there again in 1900 when he was active in the Buffalo Society of Artists and may have remained in the city during the early years of the present century.
