Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A fine still life oil on canvas (laid to board) of roses by Edouard Chappel 1859-1946. The painting has a simplicity and beauty that is enchanting, a bunch of white roses laid gently on a blue grey background. The work is very much in the Impressionist manner with quick bold confident brushstrokes. The painting is signed: E.Chappel for Edouard Chappel who was born in Antwerp where he studied at the Fine Arts Academy. He was the co-founder, with fellow Belgian artist Henry Rul, of Aze ick can (‘as I can’), a Belgian artistic movement. Chappel exhibited at the Salon d’Automne, Paris, in 1907 and at the Royal Academy in London between 1892 and 1933 and was a member of the International Society of Artists.

The painting is frame in a period gilt frame. The work has been professionally cleaned and the whole is ready to hang and makes the most beautiful subtle decorative impact. C.1910.

Overall sizes in inches including frame: 17 by 14
