A gorgeous, sensitive depiction of a little Parisian lad - most likely a Montmartre kid - dating from ca 1920. The little boy is dressed in the -the ubiquitous - sailor's shirt, the marinière.

The painting is on a high quality canvas and stretcher from the prestigious fine art materials supplier "de Rivière" , who had a shop at Nos 3-4 Rue des Beaux Arts in the St Germain area of Paris from 1888 until 1922.

This information helps to confirm the dating of our painting - it is unlikely to have been painted much after De Rivière went out of business in 1922!

Measuring 41 x 33 cm cm, the portrait is housed in its superb original, wood sculpted "Montparnasse" frame. The overall framed size is 58 x 49 cm .

The painting is unsigned - which is quite normal, as it is likely a study, given the light touch.

In view of the quality - not only of the artwork but also of frame and materials used - I believe it to be the work of an excellent, recognized and highly reputed artist.

There are annotations on the back of the canvas as well as on the stretcher bars, but I have not been able to decipher them.

The painting would look even more spectacular after a light clean (vintage condition is reflected in the price) but may perfectly well be displayed as is.
