His style is confident, his composition mature, and yet, there is still the freshness of youth. Our painting is in that respect similar to the work you will see on the artist's Wikipedia page. Both are painting at the same period, and represent the same place: the harbour of Nowe Warpno (then Neuwarp) in Pomerania.
Hartig had studied at the Berlin Academy of the Arts from 1895, initially with Paul Vorgang and later with Eugen Bracht, whose "master student" he had became.
He exhibited for the first time in 1901 at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition, and his success was phenomenal. On the very first day, the State of Prussia acquired one of his pictures for the National Gallery.
From 1906, Hartig took part in the exhibitions of the Berlin Secession movement, and in 1909, exhibited at the Great German Art Exhibition in New York. Numerous prizes followed, so that eventually, Hartig represented Germany at the 11th Venice Biennale in 1914.
A native of Pomerania, he co-founded, in 1916 the Pomeranian Art Association. A favourite spot in Pomerania for him was clearly Nowe Warpno/Neuwarp, where some of his best work was created. Ours is one of them.
Hartig took part in the 1929 exhibition "100 years of Berlin Art". There have since been retrospectives of his work, which can also been found in numerous museums.
Our painting is an oil on panel, in all original condition, measuring 33 x 49,5 cm. The framed size is 44 x 60 cm.
