The landscape painter, Archibald Kay, studied at the Glasgow School of Art and the Academie Julien, Paris. He spent much of his professional career in his birthplace, Glasgow. He became a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1892, an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1916 and a full member in 1931. He exhibited regularly with these organisations and with the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. He was vice-president of the Glasgow Art Club in 1903–4 and President in 1904–5.
