Bearing Signature Corot Superb French Portrait of a Girl, Ca 1850-1880 Oil on Canvas

I acquired this little gem of an oil on canvas (19 x 14 cm) aware only that there was a trace of a signature, but not certain what it was. I felt very excited to have found it: it is fresh, so realistic, so ahead of its time - almost edgy (in a very good way). Discovering the signature was Corot was almost a let down: knowing that 19th century collectors loved adding a Corot signature to anonymous artworks of great quality. Personally, I feel this work is more likely to be by the great realist artist Jozef Israels - but it is difficult to be certain.

It is an unusual, atmospheric portait, a precursor to impressionism - and quite delightful.
