John Bowman was born in Radford, Nottingham . His father was a lace maker.

In 1887 he started at the Nottingham School of Art part time, while employed as a warehouse clerk, and was a contemporary of Harold and Laura Knight. He was taught by Thomas Barrett, all of whom would become members of The Staithes Group. In 1903 he left Nottingham and moved to the North Yorkshire coast and lived at Sandsend. In later years he moved to Elstree in Hertfordshire were he died in 1923.

He exhibited at Nottingham, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, The Royal Institute of Oil Painters and The Royal Academy. He was elected a member of the Nottingham Society of Artists in 1902.
