Large Oil Painting of Snowdonia by Alfred Oliver

A superb large example of the work of the artist Alfred Oliver, this scene shows a wooded path looking towards snow capped mountains, almost certainly Snowdonia where the artist lived. The painting is signed by the artist, who was originally from Nottingham but moved to Wales. Alfred Oliver had a great ability to paint weather conditions and times of day and this is a tour de force example of this with this view of a landscape on the cusp of winter. A highly regarded landscape artist Alfred Oliver is much collected and exhibited seven times at the Royal Academy between 1886 and 1921. This example is extremely unusual for the artist in that the size is so large and he usually painted smaller more detailed landscapes, this work is much looser and freer than he usually paints with the foreground painted in almost an impressionist manner and the detail is concentrated on the mountains in the distance. The painting is framed in it's original gilt frame which is wonderful quality and indicates the work was probably exhibited. The whole is in excellent ready to hang condition C.1910.
