To me, this is the firebrand lady, a dancer, juggling balls of fire ... and maybe happily raising hell a little, joyfully, at the same time. To you, it might mean something else entirely.
The artist, Mireille Glodek-Miailhe (1921-2010) had an exceptional fate.
Politically committed, she fought for feminism, anticolonialism and was active in the French Resistance during the Nazi occupation of France. Her artistic work is, in the same way, of a rare intensity. A "colourist", in the tradition of Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard, her works are exuberant and full of audacity.
Painted circa 1950-60 before her more abstract period, this artwork is a gouache on paper measuring 31 x 48 cm at sight.
There are a few hairline scratches on the glass plane of the frame, but the frame remains handsome and makes for an overall size of 55 x 72 cm .
