19th century portrait of sir Walter Scott after the original by Sir William Allan detailed below.
 
Known as ‘The Minstrel of the Scottish Border’, this full-length portrait shows Sir Walter Scott against a background of moorland, with two lively Dandie Dinmonts (terriers ) at his feet. The landscape shows the area surrounding his beloved Abbotsford home in the Scottish Borders, on the banks of the river Tweed. The somewhat peculiar pose and very characteristic clothing appear in several other works by william Allan. The original of this portrait was painted some ten years after Scott’s death, and exhibited first in 1846.
 
19th century oil on canvas housed in a gilt frame in overall very good condition.
 
Overall size being height 126 x 98 cm ( 49.5 x 38.5 inches approx) the painting is 99 x 74 cm (39 x 29 inches approx)
