Born in Port-au-Prince on January 3, 1933. Calixte Henry initially worked several years as a telegraph operator before enrolling in the Centre d'Art in 1955. The Centre d'Art was the cradle of Haitian painting, a young movement of art.
In 1959, Calixte he left the Centre d'Art to continue his research alone. Our painting is an older work and dates from this period. It was acquired by its previous French owners in 1960.
Calixte Henry worked with the Galerie Monnin and was interested and impressionism and cubism. He stopped painting with brushes to use razor blades, which gives his painting a finer touch and transparency. Later, he painted with a palette knife.
Henry received a fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation of New York in the 1980s. His works have been widely exhibited in France and in Switzerland as well as in Haiti and the US, and have a world-wide reputation among galleries and collectors. His paintings illustrate scores of books on Haitian art.
