Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1880s.
Letters would be mailed in the box and the staff would be able to see through the glass front if there was mail to be taken to the Post Office.
This particular box also has a telegrams drawer which would contain telegrams for completion and an integrated pen compartment.
What makes this a rarity is the integrated barometer, which will require acclimatization in it;s new home. There is a solid brass plaque either side of the barometer which could be engraved if desired.
The letter box has a large solid brass plate around the opening marked LETTERS, there is a Bramah lock, a sign of true quality; the key is a replacement and requires a little push down on the lid as well as pushing in the key as all Bramah's ... so working but requires a little fiddling with.
Either side of the box is a space for stationery or books to finish off this grand piece. Excellent condition and an important and imposing piece; with the base measuring 18 3/4" wide x 8" deep and the back standing 15 1/2" tall.
