Chestnut Trees in the Limousin Region - Preparatory Work for a Panel Exhibited at the Exposition Universelle Paris 1937 - Oi on Panelby Almery Lobel Riche (1877-1950)

1920 - 1940
Description

This superb landscape of chestnut trees in the Limousin/Correze region of France by Amery Lobel-Riche (1877-1950) has a very interesting story!

It is, in fact a preparatory work for a vast decorative panel which the artist had been commissioned to do for the Paris Universal Exposition of 1937. Formally named "International Exposition of Art and Technology in Modern Life" was one of the major events of 1937 (see its Wikipedia entry).

The oil on board here presented is a study of a larger work in the French Pavillion dedicated to "Woodland in France", as explained in handwritten notes by the artist on the back of the panel.

The panel measures 27 x 35 cm without the frame, which makes the overall size significantly larger.

Born to French parents in Geneva, Switzerland, Alméry Lobel-Riche was a towering figure in French print-making. Lobel-Riche studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Montpelier, and then under Léon Bonnat at the Beaux-Arts, Paris. His first success came when his drawings were accepted for publication by Le Rire in 1895. By the 1930s he was extremely famous and hence received the commission for the Exposition Universelle. Lobel-Riche's wife was a native of the Correze region, where the artwork was painted. It is signed and dated 1937 at the lower right.
