French Antique Modernist Little Girl and Doll Oil on Canvas Painting Dated 1949 Claude Mendelovic

Description

Strikingly modern and yet very touching, going straight to the heart, is this little girl and doll, an oil on canvas by Claude Mendelovic, signed and dated 1949 on the lower right.

The painting measures 65 x 54 without the frame.

The picture was painted just after the war during a very poor period, which means the materials used were not of highest quality. Hence, the canvas is quite rough and there is paint loss around the edges.

Mendelovic was a militant artist whose work figures notably in the "Quinze dessins pour la Paix" (with Fernand Léger and Boris Taslitzky, among others). He exhibited with the Union des Arts Plastiques and at the Galerie Kriegel, Avenue Matignon, Paris.
