Cezannian Still Life with Figs and Pomegranates Antique Oil on Canvas C 1943 Antoine Martinez (French 1913-1970)

Description

Martinez was brought up in Algeria, which maybe explains the choice of southern fruit. He came to study in Paris, won the prestigious Price of Rome, and exhibited at the Galerie Bernheim Jeune, the almost mythical art dealers who represented Matisse, Bonnard, Renoir.

Our painting itself measures 46 x 33 cm, and 54 x 46 cm with its originalframe.

The signature is etched into the paint on the upper left, and there is a note from the artist identifying the painting on the verso. The painting figures in the archives of Diego Martinez, the artist's son, and will figure in the catalogue raisonné wich is being prepared. Mr Martinez confirmed that the painting dated from the early 1940s.

This painting would be stunning in any dining room.
