Our painting bears an old exhibition label with its title 'Neige à Cimiez' on the verso.
It measures 65 x 54 cm, and with its stunning frame 85 x 74cm.
He became part of the artistic circles that included Henri Matisse, Pierre Bonnard, Albert Marquet as well as numerous musicians and writers.
The picture dates most likely from the winter of 1940-41, which brought record low
temperatures and snow to much of Europe, including the Mediterranean.
In 1941 Carlos-Reymond and his wife, the daughter of fellow artist Henri Lebasque, moved to Cimiez, where they became the neighbours of their close friend, Matisse.
Cimiez is on the heights of Nice. Henri Matisse had moved there in 1938 to live in the Regina Palace, the former Grand Hotel built for Queen Victoria. It had been converted into flats, and Matisse occupied a vast apartment/studio there, which overlooked the Cimiez hill with its monastery.
One of the distinguishing features of the Regina Palace is its cast-iron footbridge, which leads over a road to its gardens. When one compares the footbridge with the one depicted in our painting, one realises that what we see is probably the view from Matisse’s window
at the Regina Palace!
This painting is in "studio sale" condition, and would benefit from a light clean and re stretching or tension bands. This is reflected in the price.
The very large, ornate and fragile frame makes this painting a challenge to ship. A reduction is offered should you wish to acquire the painting without its frame.
