A striking oval portrait of a Parisian Beauty, ca 1853-54, by Gottlob Christoph Jacob Fischer (1829-1905)

This is an oval oil on canvas , which bears the stamp of the distinguished 19h century Paris artists materials supplier Colcomb-Bourgeois, Au Spectre Solaire, 18 quai de l'Ecole. Colcomb-Bourgeois provided artists materials to the likes of Corot and Winterhalter. The painting measures 55 x 46 cm.

Fischer was a German painter and sculptor, who trained in Paris with Ary Scheffer in 1853-54. The work here presented was painted during this period, when Fischer was only 24 years old. Fischer would later settle in the Netherlands and eventually return to Germany, where he received commissions from the Royal family of Wurttemberg.

A perfect example of French portraiture from the Romantic period, our painting is very close to the style of Ingres. We know nothing about the striking sitter.
