French 19th Century Shepherd in Provence Antique Oil Portrait Theodore Jourdan (

Description

Poignant oil on board portaitof a Country man -possibly a shepherd- by Théodore Jourdan (1833-1908). It is signed at the lower left.

An artist from the South of France, Jourdan studied in at the Fine Arts Academy in Marseilles, where he later taught. His preferred subject matter were scenes and people from Provence. He bequeathed 19 large paintings and a number of drawings to his home town, Salon-de-Provence, in return for a life pension for his widow: these paintings can now be seen in the Empéri Castle.

The painting alone, without frame, measures 33 x 24 cm. Its original frame is not in good condition, but brings the size to 42 x 35 cm.

The upper border of the panel is somewhat irregular and may have been trimmed by 3-4mm.
