A beautiful painting on panel in the ancient encaustic technique by Pierre Girieud (1876-1948). It depicts a hill top village in the French Luberon.

Pierre Girieud was a great artist and highly respected as such by his fellow artists, who were among the greatest names in French art. He was friends with the young Picasso in 1900 in Montmartre, where he was also close to Marquet and Camoin.

Initially on the fringes of the Nabis mouvement (he exhibited with Maillol), he soon became a Fauvist, exhibiting at the prestigeous Berthe Weil Gallery, and - with Kandinsky and Jawlensky- in Munich as part of the Blauer Reiter movement.

Girieud later turned to neo-classicism, and our painting, from this this period. It is signed

and dated 1947 on the lower right, and is titled/situated "Cadenet, le matin" on the verso. Cadenet is near Avignon, and close to the Sainte-Victoire mountain which was so greatly loved by Césanne.

The size of our painting alone is 38 x 46 cm, the overall framed size in a lovely mid 20th century wood carved frame is 59 x 67 cm.
